The science behind the use of essential oils to treat medical conditions, is important for Aromatherapists to study and understand. Every day the industry learns something new about the way essential oils work physically and emotionally, both in and on our bodies and in our brains.
Aromatherapy is the art and science of using essential oils to promote or improve both psychological and physical health and well-being.
Aromatherapy practices include the internal, topical and inhaled use of essential oils.
The science is used to obtain FDA approval, it cannot legally be used to justify violating Federal Laws. And marketing includes sharing testimonials in person or in print, including online on websites or in social media. If one implies an essential oil treats, cures or prevents a illness or disease, they are selling drugs.
Our Trade Association is being created for the purpose of setting minimal Trade Standards for the sale of essential oils and aromatherapy products. These are the product sales which are currently regulated by FDA and FTC laws. Any ethics requirements or Member Pledge will apply specifically to the labeling, marketing and and/or advertising of essential oils and aromatherapy products, sold to the general public. These requirements do not apply when an aromatherapist may sell an aromatherapy product, individual essential oil or blend (custom or otherwise), to a client during the course of a private consultation, any more than FDA/FTC regulations apply to that transaction. Anyone in the practice of providing private consultations should consult with their State Board of Health or Attorney Generals Office to determine what laws if any, allow for their practice.
